Why elderberry is so special
Elderberries are loaded with vitamins and antioxidants, especially anthocyanin, which has antiviral properties that may prevent or reduce the severity of certain common infections.
Most historians typically trace its healing abilities back to Hippocrates, the ancient Greek known as the “father of medicine,” who described the plant as his “medicine chest” because it was used to treat many ailments including the common cold, flu, constipation, hay fever, and sinus infections. Because of its long history since the ancient times, it is recognized as one of the top antiviral herbs in the world.
Expert Opinion:
A 2019 study on elderberry for both cold and flu suggested that the fruit substantially reduced upper-airway symptoms. (Jessie Hawkins, Colby Baker, Lindsey Cherry, Elizabeth Dunne)
“Elderberry inhibits the early stages of an infection by blocking key viral proteins responsible for both the viral attachment and entry into the host cells.” Golnoosh Torabian, Ph.D.
“Once a cell already contained infection, the same chemicals were significantly effective in stopping the virus from propagating.” Peter Valtchev, Ph.D.
“In a study paper that appears in the Journal of Functional Foods, the investigators report that substances present in elderberries can stop an influenza virus from entering and replicating in human cells.”
“Several studies have found benefits to support the use of elderberry syrup for flu symptoms as well. Specifically, the flavonoids in the extract bind to the H1N1 human influenza virus as well as the H5N1 avian influenza virus.”
“A 2016 study published in Nutrients showed that elderberry supplementation was able to reduce cold duration and symptoms in air travelers.”
A review of 4 randomized control studies in 180 people found that elderberry supplements significantly reduced upper respiratory symptoms caused by viral infections (more info here).
What about Coronavirus?
It is important to understand that no supplement will cure or prevent Covid-19. The best prevention we know today is social distancing and proper hygiene. Scientists would agree that the key to prevent infections and disease is to keep our immune system healthy. Taking small amount of elderberry could be beneficial to our health especially during flu seasons.
Preparation Process
The uncooked berries, leaves, bark and roots of the elderberry plant contain the chemicals lectin and cyanide, which can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
First, we remove any unripe berries, leaves, and stems
Then, we cook the berries and seeds to deactivate the toxin

Our take
While more rigorous scientific studies is needed, the evidence is compelling because of its long history since ancient times. We believe elderberry is good to have especially during the cold seasons. It is definitely worthy to try it out for yourself. It is also important to take it in moderation because too much of this isn’t good. Adding one small teaspoon to your tea is just enough!
